August 19, 2022Have you ever asked yourself, what is the meaning of Sangha or Sanga? On this website of Madhukar Enlighten Life you will find the spelling with ‘h’ and James writes it without. In India everybody is familiar with the word Sangha. But this website is read from people from all over the world and this blog post is for you in case you don’t know about the meaning of Sangha. Mira for example mentioned the Sangha in her letter (klick), which was written to Madhukarji – but also to the Sangha. It is a Sanskrit word and I would like to have James Robinson Cooper explain it.
James, what is the meaning of Sangha?
‘Sanga’ is a word from Sanskrit which is described as to connect (sa) with the whole (anga) and to connect (sa) with the component parts (anga) a word which means the ‘community’ the ‘group’ the ‘assembly’.
Sangha is the community of the wise
‘Sanga’ can be seen within ‘sat sanga’ meaning the community (sanga) of the wise (sat) and on a bridge within America which spans the Charles river from Cambridge to Boston it says ‘the community of the wise is the welfare of the world’.
Another meaning of Sangha: What moves or brings people together
‘Sanga’ is also seen within ‘synagogue’ a word from the Jewish tradition whose ‘syn’ is ‘san’ a word from Sanskrit meaning ‘together’ and ‘agogue’ is ‘aja’ a word from Sanskrit meaning ‘moving’ as in that which moves or brings (aja) people together (san).
The word sangha is connected to the Hebrew word Sabbath
As ‘sanga’ and the language of Sanskrit is related to ‘synagogue’ and the Jewish tradition we may also find a similar relationship between ‘sabha’ a word from the language of Sanskrit and ‘sabhath’ a word from the language of Hebrew.
A related word of Sangha is Sabha
‘Sabha’ is a word from Sanskrit meaning an ‘assembly’ ‘gathering’ ‘congregation’ its an assembly of like minded people who share their common interests for the betterment of the individual and the collective whole.
